PROPERTY

A Historical Estate

- The Story -

The history of the Gesù site begins in 1856 when the provincialate of the Belgian Jesuits acquired the site. Built in a neo-Gothic style in 1860, the facade, with a style somewhere between Art Deco and Modernism, was added between 1937 and 1939. This special architecture gives the church a unique and iconic status. The new church was solemnly consecrated in 1939, and the last public religious services took place in 1977, after which the site was abandoned and subsequently deconsecrated.

In 2006, a Belgian family acquired the entire Gesù site. Their initial plan was to develop an ambitious luxury hotel with 150 rooms. However, from the submission of the first permit application, the project faced strong reactions. In the following years, numerous objections and legal actions were taken.

Unoccupied for close to 50 years, the infrastructure requires a full renovation approach but offers a great opportunity for church preservation and community revitalization.

- The Property -

The property comprises two buildings: a church and a chapel, both located on the same city block. The church enjoys a prominent location facing the Botanical Garden. The chapel is situated on the street at the back.

- The Church -

The church stands proudly on rue Royale with a footprint of 1,386 m². Unfortunately, the effects of desacralization and years of abandonment have left their mark, necessitating substantial restoration and investment.

- The Chapel -

In its very unique 19th-century Byzantine style, the chapel is located at the back of the church at the corner of Rue Brialmont and rue de la Comete. Total GFA spans over 2,350 m². The chapel offers high ceiling heights and great volumes.

We are building the right place and the right community.

Together we can make this vision a reality.
